Thank you to Virtue for sending me a ton of products to try out and demo for you guys!
It’s probably been about four years since I have worn my hair in braids. As a curly girl, I’m always open to protective styles to help with hair growth and a way to switch up my hair. I usually go to a stylist to braid my hair, but I wanted to share experience of me doing my own braids at home!
I know how it can be to go to a stylist these days and the prices tend to be outrageous. So I figured that I can do them myself, it shouldn’t be too hard. After watching a few YouTube videos — I decided to go for it. Having two days off from work was very helpful as well so I could have time to complete the look. I’m going to link the video I watched here.
HOW I PREPPED MY NATURAL HAIR FOR BRAIDS
A protective style defeats the point if you’re not protecting your natural hair. When prepping my hair for braiding, I made sure to thoroughly wash and deep condition my hair to ensure that my hair is clean and moisturized. After washing and deep conditioning, I took my time to detangle and add a leave in conditioner. Lastly, to make sure my hair is moisturized, I added a curl cream and Moroccan oil to seal my hair.
To wash and condition my hair, I decided to use the Virtue Full Shampoo & Conditioner. I felt this was the best option to ensure that my hair will be cleansed throughly and hydrated.
For added moisture, I used the Virtue Purifying Leave in Conditioner to combat the frizz, add moisture, and leaves my hair smooth.
HOW LONG AND TYPE OF BRAIDING HAIR I USED
It took about 8 hours (including breaks) to complete this look. I will say, if you do not have 8 hours of free time, do not get started on a project like this. I sat in front of the tv, turned on Hulu, and watched a season of the Real Housewives of Atlanta (LOL). For the type of hair I used, I used 8 packs of the kanekalon hair. After braiding the hair, to seal the ends I dipped the hair in boiling hot water. To help with the frizz, I used mousse and edge control to make my edges nice and sleek.
Virtue Volumizing Mousse to tone down the frizz.
After finishing, I was shocked to see how they turned out. I was excited to see that I saved $200 just by doing it myself at home. I can see myself doing them more often in the future.
Thanks again to Virtue for sending me a ton of products to try out! I cannot wait to share more of my favorite hair styles in the future!
