How to Care for your Knotless Braids

Braids are a great protective style that can help maintain the overall health of your hair. One of my favorite things about braids is that they are generally a low maintenance style.  I have been getting box braids for years but I finally made the switch over to knotless braids.

What are knotless braids?

Knotless braids are essentially box braids but done in a different technique. Regular box braids begin by knotting the braiding hair tightly on the scalp. Knotless braids start with the braiding hair feeding into your natural hair. This technique keeps your hair and edges more protected by using less tension on your scalp and hairline. My stylist told me that you are able to style your knotless braids the same day of the install due to them being lightweight.

How to care for your knotless braids

When wearing a protective style, you still have to care for your hair and scalp. My stylist told me that knotless braids can last from 6 to 8 weeks depending on how you care for them. Also make sure you are wearing a silk scarf/bonnet or sleeping on a silk pillowcase.  Currently, I am at the 6 week mark and I have been noticing that knotless braids can wear quicker than traditional box braids. Here’s a few product recommendations that I use to maintain my knotless braids to clean, moisturize, and tame frizz.

Dry Shampoo

My stylist told me to refrain from washing my braids with water because it can cause more frizz and told me to opt for a dry shampoo. I have been loving this dry shampoo from Waterless to cleanse my scalp and remove build up and dirt. It’s also paraben and alcohol free which is a plus!

Scalp Treatment

In order to care for my scalp, I have been using a scalp serum at night. I love this one from Virtue.

I also incorporate a mousse or foaming product to help tame the frizz. I part my hair down the middle and generously apply mousse to smooth my hair.

Edge Control

Laid edges actually helps with making your braids look newer. At night before bed I will use edge control to lay down my baby hairs and tie them down with a silk scarf.

Hair Oil

Growing up as a Black girl, my mom used to always oil my scalp once a week and as an adult, I still incorporate it in to my hair routine. I have an extremely dry and itchy scalp so I like to make sure my scalp is moisturized. With my knotless braids, I will oil my scalp twice a week at night before bed.

That is it! I’m so happy I finally made the switch over to knotless braids. I highly recommend for your next protective style.
